Literacy Circles for First Graders
Literacy circles are being used in classrooms in several grade levels. What grade levels work the best and are first graders too young to participate? I have found that using literacy circles, or "book clubs" as we call them, create an interest in books and stories for young children that might otherwise be thought of as something they have to do. Most first graders really want to learn to read but when they struggle with Reading, they look at it as work that they have to do and isn't fun. Bringing all reading levels together with a book of their choice allows children to discuss books and see the story behind the words. Each child comes with their job to share so everyone takes part. Typically in a group, the higher level students take charge and leave the lower level students participating very little. With literacy circles, or book clubs, every student plays an equal part. From my experience, it is well worth the effort to begin this experience as low as the first grade level.
